About Our Ministry

Located in New Providence, Bahamas, the Christian Counselling Centre exists to help hurting people in our local communities and beyond by providing professional counselling and educational resources that inspire growth and healing in our clients. The ultimate goals are that clients grow in their relationships with God, with themselves, and with others in an accepting, caring, and confidential environment.

We offer counselling covering a variety of topics, including spiritual growth, family issues, marriage, relationships, adolescent behaviour, AIDS, substance abuse, and others.

Our History

The Christian Counselling Centre was first born out of a ministry and we first opened our doors in New Providence early in 1986, responding to the great need for help by cocaine addicts and their families. After providing treatment for substance abuse issues for two years, we shifted our focus to providing family support services. The Christian Counselling Centre now provides counselling to individuals, couples, families, and groups for a number of issues including marriage, family, behavioral, interpersonal, grief, HIV/AIDS support, spiritual, emotional, stress and anger management. Since we opened, we have served thousands of clients in our local community and in surrounding towns and islands.

Although we have an hourly rate for therapy, we try to assist clients with financial need by offering a sliding scale for their sessions. This is made possible by donations we receive from individuals, churches, and other groups.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a process in which one person seeks to help another person to better understand himself and his life circumstances, and to face and work through life issues with which he is struggling, with a view to making choices that will result in growth both intrapersonally (within himself) and interpersonally (between himself and another or others).

What is individual therapy?

Individual Therapy is a relationship between a therapist and a client in which the therapist regularly attempts to help the client examine their experience of life. They establish goals to help the client make positive changes in their life, both improving unsatisfactory situations and experiencing growth.

What is couple therapy?

Couple Therapy is a relationship between one or two therapists and two clients (one male and one female) are in a relationship in which they are experiencing difficulty (girlfriend/boyfriend; engagement; marriage). The therapist(s) regularly attempt(s) to help the couple examine the unsatisfactory aspects of their relationship with a view to their making positive changes therein. We also offer Pre-Marital Counselling to help engaged couples prepare themselves for living together as a married couple.

Do you offer pre-marital counselling?

We offer pre-marital counselling to help prepare engaged couples for living together as a married couple and other common aspects of marriage.

How much does counselling cost?

Our sessions are usually $75 per session. Sessions beginning after 4:00 p.m. each day and 11:00 a.m. on Fridays must be paid for before the session begins. Those seeking counselling during our “after-hours” (before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.) are asked to pay $100/session. We offer a sliding scale (between $30-$65) and “donation-based” payments to clients with financial assistance.

How is my fee determined based on the sliding scale?

Our sliding scale is based on the client’s income, usually within the range of $30-$65. Depending on the client’s situation, we sometimes accept payment based on a “donation” basis.

How often would you anticipate seeing me?

While each case is up for determination, we generally recommend that clients commit to eight to ten weeks of once-a-week sessions, lasting 50 minutes each (30 minutes for children).

Are your appointment times flexible or will I get my own slot?

We prefer to make standing appointments with clients. As needed, we can make adjustments based on the client’s schedule needs.

How long are the sessions?

In general, clients work for eight to ten weeks, once a week, in a 50-minute session (30 minutes for children). Group session requirements are determined based on the group’s needs before sessions begin.

What is your training (i.e. degrees / certifications)?

Each of our counsellors follows the AACC standards of practice and all of them are also trained under the Prepare/Enrich curriculum, a marriage and relationship certification course. How long have you worked in this field?

All of our counsellors have a combination of over 110 years of working in mental health care, each with specific life experiences and specialties that provide clients with a variety of expertise to choose from. Learn more by reading the bios of each of our therapists.

Do you think there is hope for me / us?

There is hope for everyone! The key elements to successful counselling are openness and willingness from the client to put in the work to grow and change.

Does _________ have to find out about what I am working on?

We practice full confidentiality, so no one will know that you are in counselling or what you are discussing. The only circumstances we break confidentiality is in the case where the client or others may be in danger.

Do you accept credit cards? What are your preferred payment methods?

We accept all major credit cards, Paypal, cheques, cash and direct deposits.

If counselling is not working, can I leave?

Clients are free to terminate their session(s) at any time. Counselling is only effective if a client is here and working on their issues willingly.
